Preparing Your Home For A Long Vacation


Being worried about your home while on a long vacation can make your trip a little less enjoyable. Here are some ways to reduce your worries and prepare your home to keep it safe while you are gone.



  • Turn off all the water supply valves to your sinks, toilets, and washing machine to prevent potential floods. If you are in a state that gets has winter seasons with snow, make sure you blow you sprinkler system out before the first freeze and unhook your garden hose.

  • Unplug all electronics and small appliances to prevent electrical surges that could cause a fire.

  • Repair broken exterior doors and windows, and install heavy duty locking devices.

  • Adjust your thermostats to conserve energy, and lower the water heater temperature. Turn off your air conditioner while you are gone.

  • Make sure your houseplants will have enough water. You can use plant wicks as watering devices for your indoor plants.

  • Install automatic timers for indoor lights and motion detector lights for outdoors.

  • Notify family, friends, neighbors, and alarm company of how long you will be gone. Avoid announcing your absence on answering machines.
